Masterclass | Decoding Deep Tech Founding Teams: How to Assemble Teams That Survive the Valley of Death

Workshop Room 1

Deep tech startups often fail to overcome the Valley of Death—the gap between early-stage funding and market traction where over 90% fail due to funding shortfalls. The composition and strength of the founding team determines determine whether a breakthrough startup survives this perilous stage or joins the long list of failed projects. Our presentation shows results from a unique dataset of  5,000 global deep tech startups and 11,500 founder profiles about the human capital of  founding teams of deep tech startups. Our findings reveal that diverse co-founder expertise, a mix of academic and industry backgrounds, and technical-business pairings improve funding outcomes.

Masterclass | Leading in Founder Mode: Why the Manager Mode Fails in Rough Waters

Lovelace Stage

In tough times, traditional Manager Mode (centred on formal meetings, delegation, and hierarchy) fails. What is needed is Founder Mode: hands-on leadership, being present, leading by walking around, driven by informality and an obsession with detail.

Thomas Sattelberger, former board member at Lufthansa, Continental, and Deutsche Telekom, and ex-State Secretary, has lived this at the highest levels. His career was defined by navigating transformation and turnaround scenarios. In this masterclass, he will challenge business school myths about leadership and coach founders, investors, and corporate leaders on how to lead from the front, with all hands on deck, and thrive in chaos. Expect hard truths, war stories, and practical tools for leading when it matters most.
